Ravenscar is officially recognized as a stargazing location and did you know the North York Moors coastline offers an opportunity for occasional glimpses of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)? Imagine standing under a sky so clear you can see the Milky Way with just the naked eye! Our dark skies are not only perfect for stargazing but also for spotting nocturnal wildlife - from the haunting calls of nightjars (April-August) to the swoop of bats, the hoot of owls and the flutter of moths.
If you think the North York Moors are enchanting by day, just wait until you experience their magic by night!

You can walk the Cleveland Way at any time of year but if you want to see the moorland heather in bloom, the best time to visit is late August and early September.
Historically the route links together the bronze age tumuli (burial mounds) on the high watershed of the moors. During Summer months the full walk can be completed during daylight.
Smuggling was a thriving underground trade in North Yorkshire during the 18th and 19th centuries, with goods like spirits and tea being smuggled into the country. Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay are among the places famous for smuggling, but Ravenscar has its own hidden stories and Worfolk cottage has a smugglers window. But which room is it in?
